The St. Louis Public Library system has been ranked among the top five urban libraries for the past six years. Its impressive headquarters, called Central Library, was built in downtown St. Louis in 1912 and was designed by celebrated American architect Cass Gilbert. Central Library contains the majority of the system's 4.7 million piece collection and serves as the nerve center for its citywide 17 locations.
A complete modernization and restoration of this historic structure began in mid-2010. The work will increase the building's public space by 65%, and revitalize Central Library for its next century of service.
The Central Library Project will cost a total of $70 million, with the St. Louis Public Library Foundation conducting a $20 million capital campaign to support it.
Headed by Alison Nichols Ferring and Thomas F. Schlafly, the Central To Your World Campaign is the biggest philanthropic campaign ever undertaken on behalf of the St. Louis Public Library.
